[Aleister Crowley]: ARCHIVE OF MATERIALS RELATING TO LA GITANA 7"
Two 7" records plus correspondence. Overall VG.
An important archive of material relating to the first public release of a record containing Crowley's voice, reading his own verse La Gitana and Pentagram. Comprises:
1. Two typed letters signed, from John Lee at Forum Music to Crowley's literary executor John Symonds. The first is a single sheet, dated 12th August 1975 and suggesting (at the behest of Kenneth Grant) the possibility of releasing the Crowley recordings as a record. The second, dated two days later, and 2pp corner stapled, is further to a telephone conversation in which it seems Symonds was generally agreeable to the idea (but not so much the b side music!) Names are floated for a possible 'name-actor' reading of Crowley poems instead, including John Gielgud and Ian Hendry. Both letters VG+.
2. 7" test pressing of Beast, Balls & Babylon (sic) the Ponton/Magee song that would eventually be renamed Scarlet Woman and issued as the b side to the Crowley recordings. This was originally sent by Forum to Symonds, who then years later passed it on to Steve Tate with an annotation on the plain white sleeve "20 Nov 1981 - Not by 666 but inspired by him, John Symonds." Included with this is a typed letter signed, from Symonds to Tate, confessing that he had forgotten what this record was actually about or who had sent it.
3. The Voice of Aleister Crowley - Pentagram and La Gitana 7"
1975 Forum Group Agency/Marabo. Pictorial sleeve (front cover by Steffi Grant, rear cover by Jan Bailey) has tape marks to top and side, overall VG in G+ sleeve. Includes paper insert The Unique and Mysterious voice of Aleister Crowley.
The finished product. On the b side is Scarlet Woman by Chakra, an occult supergroup featuring Janice Ayers, Kenneth Grant, and Mike Magee.
